Alberta Native Plant Production
Bedrock Environmental Services
Ltd. is an Alberta company growing and providing plant and seed products
since 1993, with production facilities at the farm in Sangudo and seed
propagation fields outside of St. Albert. In the past 15 years Bedrock has built a value-chain of
experience, resources, knowledge and plant production methods and
facilities. We have begun our understanding of ecological eco-system
rebuilding and stewardship, and provide those services for sustainable
landscaping practices for large commercial projects and homeowners alike.
This site is designed to get you started on YOUR stewardship project and
journey.
Natural areas in Western Canada are rapidly disappearing. Bedrock's focus is native or indigenous plants for low maintenance, minimal water needs, the diversity of life they support, superior carbon sequestration and the fact that they simply belong here. A native species is defined as a species that was indigenous to its eco-region prior to European settlement.
Consider: Native species possess vital resistance to diseases, pests, weed encroachment and climactic conditions.
The diversified gene pool has the advantage of thousands of years of adaptation to soil, water, climate, light levels.
In Canada, this means drought, extremes of heat and cold, short growing seasons, early and late frosts.
Most plant species currently used in Canada for landscaping and wildlife habitat are horticultural or agricultural varieties native to Europe and Asia.
The need to provide stewardship and preserve native habitat and original genetic material and diversity has long been understood. Simply consider where we would be today if some careless past society had destroyed the wild ancestors of domestic wheat, corn or rice. A study by the Canadian Range Management Federation for the Northern Great Plains Basin determined that in Western Canada’s threatened habitats –
- less than 1% TALL GRASS PRAIRIE remains
- less than 5% PARKLAND/FESCUE PRAIRIE remains
- less than 20% MIXED GRASS PRAIRIE remains
Our Goal is simple.
To reverse this trend by providing the services, plant material and
public outreach
so that native habitat restoration can be put into practice by all.
Our Vision
The use of native species for sustainable landscaping
in commercial, municipal and residential developments throughout Alberta.
Low impact, low maintenance and diverse ecological habitats.
