PHLOMIS:  This stately plant can reach heights of 1.5 m, with large crinkled leaves and tall stalks of deep pink/purple flowers in whorls.  Growing quickly in the spring, it generally flowers in mid to late June.  Great backdrop specimen.  Plants prefer a sunny site, but will tolerate some shade.  Average soils and moisture suit it best.  Seeds are relatively large and should be covered with 1 cm of soil when planting.  Can be direct sown in late fall/early spring or started indoors after a 2-3 week moist stratification period.  40 seeds.    P620
