PENSTEMON BARBATUS: We
have been growing this amazing species for 8 years and finally have harvested
enough seed to start selling it. Growing
to 180 cm or more this is the tallest of our Penstemon species.
Plants produce red tubular flowers from late June until early October.
Leaves are concentrated near the base of the plant – the rest is the
tall, wiry flower stalk. Loved by
hummingbirds. Seeds need to be
moist stratified for 3-4 weeks prior to starting
indoors in early April. Full sun
and average soil. Cover the seeds
with 1 cm of soil and keep moist. A
long, warm fall is needed to collect viable seed – in 2006 we finally had one.
