GOLDEN THISTLE: Actually a perennial cornflower, this 120 cm tall plant first produces a spherical gold metallic flower bud, then the bright yellow petals appear. We cut and dry the flowers at both stages for interesting additions to wreaths and arrangements. Can be direct seeded in early May, or start in cell trays in late April. Cover the seeds with 1.5 cm of soil. Plant in groups for the best visual effect. Blooms the second year onwards. Removal of the seed heads will ensure the plant doesn't spread too rapidly. Full sun and average to dry soil is best. 40 seeds. P465
