ECHIUM RUBRUM:  This amazing plant is a showcase all its own. Spires of blood red tubular flowers appear in early summer on plants growing to 1.5 m tall. Full sun and rather dry soils suit it best. A good plant for hummingbirds and bees alike. I originally received seed from the Devonian Gardens, but their literature states the plant should be only 60 cm tall - mine tripled that height in 2002 - the drought year!!. Unfortunately this species only lives for two years - it does reseed itself however. Sow seeds direct in late fall or early spring or start in containers inside for transplanting later. Cover the seeds with 1 cm of soil and don't over water.   40 seeds.    P517
