Alberta Native Plants for 2010
Bedrock Seed Bank
has a 15 year history of pioneering the propagation of
native plant supply. Our production has expanded in response to increasing
demand for sustainable and low-impact landscaping options for public land and
private developments. We will be starting over 70,00 native plant plugs for
2010, many of which are already sold, so book early.
Minimal water, low
maintenance, winter hardy plants—the major components of xeriscaping—this
is our focus. Our plant plugs are grown from our own seed and are done in
unheated cold-frames. Plant strength and root
development is our goal.
Most of our plant choices require full to almost full sun. We grow very few plants that tolerate and thrive in semi-shade conditions. We grow species native to Alberta and from similar climates around the world—they have in common deep and extensive root systems—ideal candidates for xeriscaping. 1st year plugs are started in early April in an unheated greenhouse and allowed to develop slowly.
Every species we offer in seed form is also available
in started plugs.
Want low growing species? Try Creeping Thyme, Alpine Aster and Wild Sage.
Want bees and other pollinators? Try Hyssop, Giant Hyssop and Echium.
Want interesting grasses? Try Purple Melic, Switch Grass and Blue Grama.
Let us know what you are looking for and we will work with you to provide the
best species and the quantities you need.
All our plant selections are listed on the Bedrock Plant CD—it is loaded with lots of pictures, descriptions and tips on growing the 150 plus species we will have for sale. You can pick one up free at the Farmers Market on Saturdays starting in January, or if you want it mailed to you please contact us by phone or email and we will get one out to you.
Plant plugs are grown in 96 or 72 count flats.

Mixed Species Plugs
This exciting program takes much of the planning and guesswork out of planting native Alberta species. One common concern for those interested in starting a native garden is which species grow best together, and how best to plant a mixture of different plants. We have put together plugs containing a variety of seedlings based on height and suitability. There are 6 different choices, depending on the height desired and whether grasses are to be included or not.
Please
contact us early in the year to confirm your order. There is a minimum of 12
plugs of any selection.
