CANADA MILKVETCH: Common in the parkland and boreal forest regions of the province, this showy legume is important in reclaiming disturbed lands. Plants grow to 100 cm tall and form a large colony over time from creeping rhizomes - flowers are pale to dark yellow and appear in early summer. Breaking dormancy on the seeds is difficult - the best success I have had is to drop seeds into a cup on boiling water and let them sit for 3-4 hours then plant immediately (spring planting). Cover the seeds with 1 cm of soil. Seeds can also be sown in late fall, but may take 2 years to germinate. Full to partial sun and an evenly moist site is best. 60 seeds. NF 734
